Dumbek Player

Tony Bahu has been a dumbek player for over 22 years now. He began performing on stage as a child and hasn’t left the stage ever since. He is one of the most respected Dumbek players around.

One of his claims to fame is that he programs rhythm machines to work in with his dumbek playing. This gives him the ability to be a ‘one man show’ rather than a one instrument show, which can be monotonous.

Most notably, he has crossed into the American and Latin American world with his playing. He is very excited that the music world is moving in the direction that it is. Lately his comment has been, ‘this move in the music world has opened up a space for international players like myself and has turned the audience into a more receptive one, open to new thoughts, sounds, and ideas.’

On his wish list—Well, there is no question, especially because of his Shakira dedication, one of his wishes is to perform a song with Shakira. He also wants to be a solo performer on a larger scale with dancers to accompany his playing.

His most recent hit, ‘Rock to the Dumbek’ will be released very soon. This song was written by Tony Bahu but produced by the late Amjad Abdallah (AJ), who was killed last year in his own studio around New Years Day. Tony wants so badly to release the final rendition of this not only for himself, but to honor his great friend AJ. Tony states, ‘it was a tragic loss to those who knew him and anything we can do to honor him is a blessing.’
